NYC Health + Hospitals Unveils New Community Mural at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens

The unveiling of the "Roots of Medicine" mural at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens, part of the largest public hospital mural program since the 1930s, reflects the mission of Arts for Everybody in using art to foster healthier communities and enhance healthcare environments.

A recent article from NYC Health + Hospitals discusses the unveiling of a new mural, "Roots of Medicine," at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens. This mural, created by artist Zeehan Wazed, is part of the Community Mural Project led by the health system's Arts in Medicine department. The project aims to use art to enhance the healthcare environment and engage the community. The "Roots of Medicine" mural, developed through focus groups with community members, staff, and patients, depicts eight flowers used in homeopathic medicine, symbolizing the legacy of natural remedies in medicine. This mural is among nine new murals added to the 26 previously created in the first wave of the project.

The Community Mural Project is significant as it represents the country's largest public hospital mural program since the 1930s. It not only beautifies the healthcare environment but also serves as a healthcare service by positively impacting public health and providing a sense of healing and calm. The involvement of community members in the creation process enhances the connection between the hospital and its community.

This initiative closely aligns with the mission of Arts for Everybody, which focuses on using the arts to lead to healthier people and communities. Arts for Everybody is driven by the principles of healing, equity, and community, and works towards making art more accessible and inclusive. The Community Mural Project at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens embodies these ideals by using art to improve the healthcare environment, support mental health, and foster a sense of community and inclusivity. Both initiatives demonstrate how art can be a powerful tool for healing and community engagement, highlighting the role of art in enhancing public health and wellbeing.
