Mark your calendar for July 27th as the City of Gainesville hosts an all-day, large-scale community event at Depot Park, one of the City of Gainesville’s premier parks. The event, “Summer You(th) Celebration,” will be produced by artist and producer Marion J. Caffey and feature music, dance, and live theater performances throughout the day. All together, the event will support the Gainesville community as it responds to youth gun violence and harnesses the power of arts and culture to promote community healing.

  • The City of Gainesville is using this opportunity to support the creative potential of arts and culture to promote community healing and well-being in the wake of the Covid19 pandemic. In January of 2022, the City of Gainesville’s Commission recognized youth gun violence as a local issue that has worsened in the aftermath of the pandemic. Therefore, the City of Gainesville has dedicated $648,172 of American Rescue Plan Act funding to ONOP to strengthen well-being of youth through arts and cultural programs, thereby preventing youth gun violence. This is being accomplished through a team of staff from Gainesville Fire Rescue, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, a Youth Steering Committee, and collaborations with multi-sector community partners using a Public Health prevention approach to youth gun violence. A large coordinated community event to showcase the projects will take place in Summer 2024.
